Evening of music from Serbia and the Balkans begins at 8:30pm on May 10, 2009 at Carnegie Hall



JASNA POPOVIC. This Serbian-born pianist will take us through the evening of classical and traditional music from Serbia and the Balkans, on May 10th, 2009 in Weill Hall, at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Popovic is accompanied by Ana Milosavljevic and Lynn Bechtold on violin, Ismail Lumanovski on clarinet, Vasil Vasilev on piano, Jennifer De Vore on cello and Liuh-Wen Ting on viola. This exceptional group of acclaimed musicians will present the incredibly rich and beautiful musical heritage from the Balkans. The repertoire includes mostly compositions of Serbian composers, as well as Bela Bartok’s work, which is inspired by folk music collection from the region that he compiled for Columbia University in 1940s.

Following the concert, the performers will host the audience to a light fare and cocktails at the Bechstein Pianos showroom, located on 58th street, few steps away from the Carnegie Hall.

Ana Milosavljevic


Praised by the Strad magazine as “an imaginative artist willing to think big,” violinist Ana Milosavljevic has made solo appearances in recitals at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, TheTimesCenter in New York, Kolarac Concert Hall, Belgrade Philharmonic Hall, Greenwich House Arts (in the series Women's Work), and Donnell Library. She has also performed at Merkin Hall, CAMI Hall, and the United Nations in New York. New Music Connoisseur called her a “virtuoso performer” who in a “tour de force of violin playing” displayed “a wonderful mix of technique, sensitivity and passion.” An enthusiastic advocate of contemporary music, she has premiered, performed, and recorded music by such composers as John Adams, Chen Yi, Tania León, Eve Beglarian, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Svjetlana Bukvich-Nichols, Margaret Fairlie-Kennedy, Eleanor Cory, Ljubica Maric, John Eaton, Beth Anderson, Milos Raickovich, and Gian Carlo Menotti, to name a few.

She has recorded for Albany and Chandos labels. Festival performances include Spoleto in Italy, Aspen, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the American Festival of Microtonal Music, International Review of Composers in Belgrade, The Inner Voices New Music Festival in California, and the 2008 Beijing International Congress on Women in Music. Ms. Milosavljevic is the winner of a Special Presentation Award from Artists International Presentations in New York and of several grants from New York Women Composers, Inc. A versatile performer, she is often featured with TAKE Dance Company and Thomas/Ortiz Dance, as well as in multimedia concerts. She has also been featured on numerous radio and television programs, including the Voice of America international telecasts, WNYC radio’s Evening Music with David Garland, New York’s MNN Public TV broadcasts, Belgrade radio and television, and Serbian television’s My Way series. Ms. Milosavljevic is co-founder of Serbian Arts International, an organization that promotes Serbian arts and culture worldwide. An active freelance musician in New York, Ms. Milosavljevic serves on the violin faculty of the Mannes College The New School For Music, Preparatory Division.
