Evening of music from Serbia and the Balkans begins at 8:30pm on May 10, 2009 at Carnegie Hall



JASNA POPOVIC. This Serbian-born pianist will take us through the evening of classical and traditional music from Serbia and the Balkans, on May 10th, 2009 in Weill Hall, at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Popovic is accompanied by Ana Milosavljevic and Lynn Bechtold on violin, Ismail Lumanovski on clarinet, Vasil Vasilev on piano, Jennifer De Vore on cello and Liuh-Wen Ting on viola. This exceptional group of acclaimed musicians will present the incredibly rich and beautiful musical heritage from the Balkans. The repertoire includes mostly compositions of Serbian composers, as well as Bela Bartok’s work, which is inspired by folk music collection from the region that he compiled for Columbia University in 1940s.

Following the concert, the performers will host the audience to a light fare and cocktails at the Bechstein Pianos showroom, located on 58th street, few steps away from the Carnegie Hall.

Jasna Popovic


Jasna Popovic, a pianist, won several awards, including Second Place at the National Piano Competition in Belgrade, Fourth Place at the International Competition in Rome, and has also participated at various festivals around Europe, including those in Italy, Germany, and Austria. In 2005, she was honored with an invitation to play at the International Keyboard Festival in New York where she was introduced to her principal teacher Professor Nina Lelchuk. Ms. Popovic received the 2006 Passantino Award for Special Achievements from City University of New York and the following year she performed at Steinway Hall and Lefrack Hall in New York, and Kolarac Hall, in Belgrade, Serbia with great success. Ms. Popovic had the honor of working with several renowned artists such as composer Rodin Scedrin, pianist Vadim Suhanov, and double-bassist Roman Patkolo, to name a few.

She is currently working on her solo debut album, which will primarily feature classical Serbian music. She is also in the process of planning her first European Tour.

Ms. Popovic was born in Belgrade, Serbia, where she received her first piano lesson at the age of six. She continued her studies at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Munich, Germany. Ms Popovic principal piano teachers were also Olga Jovanovic, Gitti Pirner, Claude-France Journes. Ms Popovic currently resides in New York.
